Avandia® Death Risk PDF Print E-mail

The regular use of GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) oral diabetes-managing drug, Avandia®, may result in serious side-effects that can greatly increase the risk of death.

Prescribed to patients with Type-2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes, Avandia® is designed to regulate and control blood-sugar levels.

The serious side-effects that may significantly elevate the risk of death in some patients can include the following:

    * Death

    * Heart Attack

    * Heart Failure

    * Stroke

The FDA, Avandia®, And Risks Of Death

In May 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a warning that detailed the potentially-serious risks of death associated with the prescribed use of Avandia®, which included an increase in the risk of heart-attack by more than 40-per-cent; and an increase in the risk of heart-disease by more than 60-per-cent.

A report that appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine  in November 2008 stated the following:

Of more than 28,000 diabetic patients studied, 49.7 per cent took Avandia® and 50.3 per cent took another drug: Actos®.

One year later, just under 1,900 of the patients had passed away.

The research group came to a conclusion that patients prescribed Avandia® had a death-rate 15-percent greater than those whose doctors had prescribed Actos®.

Who Is At Risk Of Death?

Those taking Avandia® whose death risk may be significantly high include:

    * Those patients who have already suffered from heart-related conditions, such as heart-attack and/or heart failure

    * Those patients suffering from diseases of the liver

    * Those patients diagnosed with elevated blood-pressure

    * Those patients who have suffered from previous strokes
