Avandia® & Diabetes PDF Print E-mail

Avandia® – which is produced by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) – is designed to regulate the blood-sugar levels of patients who have been diagnosed with Type-2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes.

Avandia® has been the subject of several studies that have concluded that using the product to treat Type-2 diabetics could increase the possibility of death, heart-attack, heart-failure, and bone fracture.

Studies, Statistics & Diabetes

In May 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released to health-care officials in the U.S. a warning that detailed the risks that might result from using Avandia® as a form of diabetic treatment.

This included significantly elevated risks of both heart-attack and heart-failure.

The FDA’s warning was dictated by a clinical study that specifically compared Avandia® to other forms of treatment for diabetes.

The study – published in the New English Journal of Medicine – showed that Avandia® may potentially increase the chacnce of heart attack by 43 percent, and may possibly increase the chance of death from heart disease by as much as 64 percent.

In addition, in a report that appeared in the November 24, 2008 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, it was revealed that an examination of more than 28,000 diabetics over the age of 65 demonstrated the following:

  •  Of the patients at issue, 49.7 percent were prescribed Avandia® and 50.3 percent were taking a different drug designed to control insulin levels: Actos®.
  • Twelve months after having been prescribed their medicines, 1,869 of the patients had died.
  • The research team concluded that those patients prescribed Avandia® had a death-rate 15-per-cent higher than those who had been prescribed Actos®.
  • The report also stated that the risk of developning heart failure in those prescribed Avandia® was more than 10 percent higher than in those taking Actos®.

Using Avandia® to help control Type-2 diabetes has also been blamed for bone fractures in a number of patients. In those prescribed Avandia®, the risk of bone fracture may be three-times that of patients not prescribed the drug.
