More Information - Gadolinium

Gadolinium PDF Print E-mail

A "paramagnetic metal ion", Gadolinium is a key component in the process called Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Gadolinium helps in providing high-quality images of bodily organs, including the brain and the kidneys. Gadolinium may also be used in Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA), which - unlike MRI – searches for evidence of heart-disease, stroke, and vascular issues.

Gadolinium

In January 2006, the journal Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation described the experiences of patients with kidney failure who had developed a potentially life-threatening condition called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF). In the weeks and months leading up to the development of NSF, the patients had all been exposed to Gadolinium-enhanced procedures.

The side-effects of NSF can be extremely serious, and can include skin-thickening - which can affect the ability to bend joints, extend joints, and even walk. NSF can also have a significant effect on the lung-vessels and the diaphragm.
