What is Gadolinium?

Defined as a "paramagnetic metal ion", Gadolinium is a central component of the process known as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). It assists in offering high-quality imagery of bodily tissue and organs, including the brain and the kidneys.

Additionally, Gadolinium may be used in Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA), which - specifically unlike MRI – searches for evidence of heart disease, stroke, and serious vascular-related problems.

Gadolinium and Kidney Failure

In January 2006, a report appeared in the pages of Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation, that detailed the experiences of patients affected by serious kidney failure, who subsequently developed a rarely-seen, but nevertheless potentially life-threatening, condition called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF).

The chief concern exhibited was that the patients with kidney failure who developed NSF had – in the weeks and months leading up to the development of NSF - been exposed to Gadolinium-enhanced MRA procedures.

Gadolinium and NSF

The side-effects of NSF can be very serious, and may include the thickening of the patient’s skin - which can significantly affect the ability to correctly bend joints, extend joints, and even walk. NSF may also significantly affect both the lung-vessels and the diaphragm. And, taking into consideration the fact that NSF is a definitively progressive condition, it may prove to be fatal in some patients.
