Gadolinium And Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis

Gadolinium is a central component of the process known as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and works by helping to secure imagery of bodily organs, such as the brain and the kidneys.

In January 2006, the publication Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation highlighted the experiences of certain patients diagnosed with kidney failure who developed a potentially life-threatening condition: Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis.

Notably, the patients who developed NSF had earlier been exposed to Gadolinium-enhanced MRA procedures.

The effects of NSF/NFD are distressing, serious and potentially fatal. They can include: (a) the thickening of skin, which can result in the inability of the patient to properly bend and extend joints, (b) a partial or complete loss of the ability to walk; and (c) damage to the lung-vessels and the diaphragm.
