Zicam® Intranasal Products linked with Loss of Sense of Smell (anosmia)

Zicam® Cold Remedy is a homeopathic medicine made by Matrixx Initiatives, an over-the-counter healthcare company. The intranasal products in question are gels that are swabbed into the nasal cavity in order to decrease the duration of the common cold.

About the FDA Zicam® Intranasal Warning

In June 2009, the FDA warned consumers not to use the swab versions of the cold remedy. The press release states that “The FDA has received more than 130 reports of loss of sense of smell associated with the use of these three Zicam products.”

The products in question are Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size (since discontinued).

A warning letter from the FDA was sent to Matrixx Initiatives advising the firm that “these products cannot be marketed without FDA approval. The warning letter also states that the products do not include adequate warnings about the risk of loss of sense of smell.”

About Anosmia – Loss of Sense of Smell

Anosmia is a serious, disabling condition that may result in the permanent loss of one of the five senses, the sense of smell; it is also often associated with a loss of sense of taste, called ageusia. It lasts for a long time and may even be permanent.

It is especially disturbing in light of why Zicam® is used in the first place: this is a product taken to alleviate a cold – a very temporary condition that passes.

Not being able to smell means not being able to smell when food is spoiled, when there is smoke, when there is a gas leak. It is devastating to anyone who works in the food industry or other industries where smell and taste is important.

“Companies have an obligation to the public to demonstrate to the FDA that their products are safe, particularly when there is evidence they may be causing serious adverse events, and they are marketed for minor, self-limiting conditions like the common cold,” said Deborah M. Autor, director of CDER’s Office of Compliance. – from the FDA Press Release.
