The DePuy Articular Surface Replacement Hip Implant is a hip replacement device created by DePuy, a Company owned by Johnson & Johnson. The device was first used in the United States in 2005.
Withdrawn from the Australian Market in December 2009, it is under examination in the United States and has been withdrawn from the American market. The FDA has received, beginning in approximately 2008, about three hundred complaints about the early failure of the DePuy ASR Hip device created by DePuy Orthopaedics. On March 9, 2010, DePuy stated that the DePuy ASR Hip Replacement would be discontinued in the American market because it was failing and requiring corrective operations.
The same release mentions a higher failure rate in smaller-boned patients and those with various bone weaknesses. There is no FDA recall at the time of research of this article. The ASR hip cup is a metal-on-metal ball and socket, large diameter hip resurfacing device used in hip surgeries.
DePuy, the company that creates the ASR hip cup, was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 1998.

Metal debris early in the placement of this implant can cause inflammation and other issues and problems, leading to damaged muscles and soft tissue.
