Dilantin® Lawyer Information

The side-effects associated with Dilantin® can be both serious and distressing, and may include Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Purple Glove Syndrome.

If you suffered from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and/or Purple Glove Syndrome after taking Dilantin®, you may have a claim for legal compensation that should be handled by an experienced Dilantin® lawyer.

Similarly, if you have a loved one who has suffered from the effects of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and/or Purple Glove Syndrome they may have a claim for legal compensation that should be handled by an experienced Dilantin® lawyer.

Serious and potentially life-threatening side-effects have been reported in some patients taking Dilantin®:

  • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
  • Purple Glove Syndrome

Dilantin® is an anti-epileptic drug – which may also be described as an anticonvulsant. Its specific purpose is to control and lessen the number of epileptic seizures in the patient. Dilantin® works by slowing down brain-impulses that may lead to epileptic seizures.

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome

A very serious, life-threatening condition that can result in skin-cell death, and that can - as a consequence - make the epidermis separate from the dermis, SJS has been associated with patients taking Dilantin®.

In addition, SJS can often lead to the development of scar-tissue within the patient’s eyelids, and which may result in severely impaired vision. In the U.S., approximately300 new diagnoses of SJS are made each year. SJS has a mortality rate of approximately 5 percent.

Purple Glove Syndrome

Purple Glove Syndrome is a poorly-understood condition of the skin, in which the extremities may become swollen, discolored and painful.

In some patients, Purple Glove Syndrome may ultimately result in amputation. Primarily, the condition has been reported in patients who are elderly, and who have been given large, multiple intravenous doses of the epilepsy drug phenytoin.

Pregnancy

If Dilantin® is prescribed during the course of pregnancy, or if the patient becomes pregnant while taking the drug, the patient should be advised that this may potentially cause damage to the fetus. Pre-natal exposure to Phenytoin has been shown to advance the potential risks of the baby developing orofacial clefts, heart defects, abnormal growth, and mental deficiencies.

The percentage of malformations in children who were born to women with epilepsy, and who were being treated with phenytoin during the course of their pregnancies, is approximately two- to three-fold that which may be expected to be found within the overall population.
