Information on Dilantin® Medication

The use of Dilantin® medication has been associated with a condition called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), a potentially-life-threatening condition that causes cell-death in the skin of the patient and, in turn, results in the epidermis separating from the dermis.

In addition the use of Dilantin® Medication which may lead to SJS, frequently results in the development of scar-tissue inside the eyelids of the patient, which may lead to corneal vascularization and severely impaired vision.

Within the United States, approximately 300 new diagnoses of SJS are made each and every year. The condition has a mortality rate of roughly 5 percent.

The use of Dilantin® has also been associated with Purple Glove Syndrome (PGS), which is a skin-disease that causes the patient's extremities to become swollen, discolored and painful.

In the most serious scenarios, PGS may lead to amputation.

PGS is generally reported amongst elderly patients, and chiefly those who have been prescribed large, multiple intravenous doses of the epilepsy drug phenytoin.

If Dilantin® is prescribed while the patient is pregnant, they should be made fully aware of the potential side-effects to the unborn fetus, and which may include:  orofacial clefts, heart problems, growth abnormalities, and mental deficiencies.

The incidence of malformations in children born to women with epilepsy who were treated with phenytoin during pregnancy is approximately 10% greater than that found in the overall population.

What is Dilantin®?

Dilantin® is an anti-epileptic drug – which can also be described as an anticonvulsant medication. Its purpose is to help control and lessen the frequency of epileptic seizures. The drug works by slowing down brain-impulses that may lead to epileptic seizures.
