Paxil® And Birth Defects

Paxil® – which is a trade-name of Paroxetine - is classified as a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. It was released in 1992 by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.

A study that appeared on February 9, 2006 in the New England Journal of Medicine focused its attention upon reports of newborn babies affected by Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN), which is a serious and life-threatening condition of the lungs.

Babies born with PPHN can experience high-pressure in the blood vessels of their lungs; and, as a consequence, cannot get sufficient quantities of oxygen into their bloodstream.

The New England Journal of Medicine study added that PPHN was found to be six times more prevalent in babies whose mothers took an SSRI antidepressant after the 20th week of pregnancy when compared with babies whose mothers were not taking antidepressants.
