Paxil® – which is a trade-name of Paroxetine - is classed as a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant, and was released in 1992 by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. Paxil® was the first antidepressant to receive formal approval in the United States for the treatment of panic-attacks. Paxil® is designed to balance levels of serotonin - a naturally-occurring substance in the brain that is involved in the regulation of mood.

On February 9, 2006, the New England Journal of Medicine published an article that highlighted reports of newborn babies affected by Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN), which is a serious and life-threatening lung-condition.

Babies born with PPHN may experience high-pressure in the blood-vessels of their lungs and cannot get adequate amounts of oxygen into their bloodstream.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine report, PPHN was around six times more prevalent in newborns whose mothers took an SSRI antidepressant after the 20th week of pregnancy when compared with babies whose mothers had not been prescribed antidepressants.
