Serious and potentially life-threatening side-effects have been reported in some patients prescribed the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant, Paxil® – which is a trade-name of Paroxetine, and which was released onto the market in 1992 by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.

Paxil® has been utilized in the treatment of such conditions as obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic-attacks, heightened states of anxiety, and depression. Paxil® was the first antidepressant that received approval within the U.S. for the treatment of panic-attacks.

Paxil® Side Effects

The February 1, 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) included the results of a study that scrutinized the experiences of a variety of pregnant women who had battled depression.

During the period of their pregnancies, some of the women who were no longer suffering from depression elected to stop taking their antidepressant medicines. Others, meanwhile, decided to remain on their antidepressant medicines.

The study concluded that those who stopped their intake were approximately five times more likely to suffer a relapse than were those who continued to take their prescribed dosage.

A paper that appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine on February 9, 2006 focused its attention upon reports of babies born with Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN): a life-threatening lung-related condition that occurs soon after birth.

Babies with PPHN have raised pressure in the blood vessels of their lungs and fail to receive adequate amounts of oxygen into their bloodstream.

The New England Journal of Medicine report stated that PPHN was around six times more likely to appear in babies whose mothers took an SSRI antidepressant after the 20th week of the pregnancy than in babies whose mothers did not take any SSRI’s.

On May 12, 2007 The New York Times reported that after analyzing data from clinical trials, GlaxoSmithKline sent letters to doctors warning that Paxil appears to increase the risk of suicide in some young adults.  The article goes on to state that while there are potential problems with the use of Paxil "It is essential that patients taking Paxil do not suddenly stop taking their medication."
