In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that taking Zoloft® while pregnant could result in a condition in babies called Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) - which is characterized by abnormal blood-flow in the heart and lungs, and which can be fatal.

The conclusions of the study in question revealed that babies born to mothers taking Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s) - the group of medicines in which Zoloft® belongs - 20 weeks or later during pregnancy, had significantly raised risks of developing PPHN than did babies whose mothers were not taking antidepressants while pregnant.

Also in 2006, the FDA stated that a serious condition called Serotonin Syndrome may develop when Zoloft® is used alongside other forms of medication known as 5-Hydroxytryptamine Receptor Agonists - which are designed to treat migraine.

The signs and symptoms of Serotonin Syndrome can include coma; potentially-hazardous changes in blood-pressure levels; vomiting; and hallucinations.
